ATTORNEYS
JOHN R. McCRAVY, III, Esq.
BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION: John began his legal career in 1985 as a Staff Attorney for the Supreme Court of South Carolina. His education includes a B.A. from Clemson University and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. John has taught higher education courses in Constitutional and Criminal Law.
CURRENT PRACTICE: John has been representing Workers’ Compensation and personal injury clients since 1987. John is licensed to practice in all South Carolina trial and appellate courts including Circuit Court, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the South Carolina Supreme Court. John is also licensed to practice in Federal District Court and the U. S. Court of Appeals.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: John is a member of the S.C. Bar Association, the S.C. Association for Justice, the Association of S.C. Claimant Attorneys for Workers’ Compensation and the American Association of Justice. John is also Board Certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. This certification requires numerous trial experiences and a day long examination. As of 2008, only 23 South Carolina attorneys hold this certification.
PERSONAL: John and his wife Dana have two children, J.R. and Kelley. His father, John R. McCravy, Jr. was a graduate of Easley High School and the Naval Academy. His Grandfather, John R. McCravy, Sr., represented Pickens County in the South Carolina House of Representatives. His Great Grandfather, Edwin P. McCravy was a South Carolina State Senator. His father-in-law, Retired Judge Curtis G. Shaw, served as a Probate Judge, Family Court Judge and as Senior Judge on the S.C. Court of Appeals.
JON E. NEWLON
BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION: Jon began his legal career with the McCravy Law Firm after 13 years as a pilot and flight instructor in the U. S. Air Force where he flew the A-10 Thunderbolt. Before practicing law, Jon worked for the Eighth Circuit Solicitor’s Office. Jon’s education includes a B.A. from The Citadel, and M.A. in Political Science from Midwestern State University, an A.A. in Paralegal Studies from Harford Community College, and a Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law. Jon was also formally trained in accident investigation while in the Air Force. Jon has taught higher education courses in business law at Lander University and alternative dispute resolution at Piedmont Technical College.
CURRENT PRACTICE: Jon’s current practice is focused in the area of civil litigation. This includes auto and truck negligence cases resulting in injuries. This also includes cases against insurance companies that refuse to pay a fair amount to injured victims and insured individuals.
Jon is licensed to practice in all South Carolina trial and appellate courts including Circuit Court, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, and the South Carolina Supreme Court. Jon is also licensed to practice in Federal District Court in South Carolina.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: Jon is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association, the South Carolina Trial Lawyer’s Association, and the American Trial Lawyer’s Association. He is specially certified to mediate cases in South Carolina. He is a member of the Greenwood Rotary Club and a member of the Government Relations Committee for the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce. He is also a member of the Board of Governors for the S.C. Association for Justice.
PERSONAL: Jon and his wife, Nancy have been married since 1984. They have two children, Jon Brooks and Caroline. Nancy’s father, Emmett F. “Buster” Brooks, is a long-time resident of Greenwood County. Nancy’s grandfather, Preston Brooks, was a United States Senator. Jon also is a certified soccer referee.
JASON L. STURKIE
BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION: Jason began his legal career with McCravy and Newlon Law Firm after the completion of his legal education. His education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of South Carolina. He also received a Juris Doctor from Mercer University School of Law. He then received a LLM in post graduate legal studies, specializing in Estate Law, from the University of Miami School of Law.
CURRENT PRACTICE: Jason’s current practice is focused upon personal injury law. This involves representing clients seriously injured in vehicular accidents.
PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: Jason is licensed to practice in all South Carolina trial and appellate courts including Circuit Court, the South Carolina Court of Appeals, the South Carolina Supreme Court and Federal District Court.
PERSONAL: Jason and his wife, Amanda, currently reside in Honea Path, SC. She is the youth and children’s minister at Bethany World Outreach Center. They have one child, Anna Grace Sturkie. They are both very active with Bethany World Outreach Center and other community ministries.
Jason was born and raised in Lexington County where most of his family still lives. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys hunting and fishing. He also enjoys coaching student mock trial teams at area schools.
